Designing Your Vision for What You Really Want (Not Just What You Think You “Should” Want) with Bailey Frumen, MSW, LCSW founder of Mindrise

Hey everyone—here we are with the second installment of our EMPOWERMENT 2020 campaign series with K-DEER, happy to be back and this time we are tackling VISION.

In our campaign kick-off, we laid out our game plan and started things off with mastering our mindset and learning how to shift our beliefs from negative to positive.

Let’s talk about vision—cultivating your vision is an essential ingredient to powering up your new year and new decade. Why? Because without vision, our big dreams just fall short. In today’s post, we’ll be talking all about designing your vision for what you really want (not just what you think you “should” want).

OK 2020…let’s do this!!

Here’s the deal, so often we say we want something—whether it’s the job, the relationship, the house, car, run a 5k, whatever sparks inspiration for you but we fail to achieve it. Why is that?

Why is it that we can get so excited about a big idea but when it comes time to actually making it happen we either chicken-out or fall paralyzed by indecision?

It all comes down to vision.

At the inception, our goals are simply dreams or wishes. In this first stage of inspiration dreams and wishes act as an initial catalyst to giving birth to our goals. Setting our goals and achieving them then give birth to planning and living our life.

But what is the bridge between “someday I will… or someday I want…” to someday becoming our actual reality? You guessed it—vision. Creating a vision of how you want your life to look weaves together dreams, intentions, and reality.

Here’s the caveat: without direction, we can get really overwhelmed when it comes to developing our vision. And everyone knows that overwhelm is kryptonite for the ambitious and driven person. You’ve come too far to shutdown so let’s give you a tool to use that will help you create your vision and exhale overwhelm out of the room.

When it comes to vision, at Mindrise we use a tool called a Vision Map. A Vision Map acts as both your compass and your guide in life, helping you to find your way from where you are now to where you want to be going forward. In a Vision Map we focus on putting together 3 elements that ultimately become your Vision Map.

First, we look at “The Big 6,” these are the 6 most influential areas of your life that help you in creating your vision:

  • Relationships
  • Vocation (career)
  • Financial
  • Spiritual
  • Mental/ Emotional
  • Physical Well-being

When we consider what we want in these six different areas, they help us form a vision for the life we want to create.

For a visual, here’s an example of a Vision Map:

Once this first step is complete, next we attach our desired feeling to the vision. Connecting our feeling to our vision sounds something like this:

“My Spiritual vision is to practice yoga 3 days a week, journal, meditate, and go for a walk in the woods, this will allow me to feel grounded and at peace.”

Quote Text: When we wait to feel how we want to feel, we miss out on enjoying the journey.

When crafting a vision, it’s not enough to declare your desired vision we also need to include your feelings alongside of your vision. Most people live in the paradigm of “I’ll be happy when…” When we wait to feel how we want to feel, we miss out on enjoying the journey.

With that line of thinking, it leads us to run raged toward crossing the finish line of what we thought we wanted without feeling our feelings along the way, we feel too burnout and exhausted to actually enjoy what we worked so hard to achieve. #nofun

Quote Text: What is your why?

The third and final step in developing your Vision Map is asking ourselves WHY we want what we want. The thing is, it’s not enough to just say you want something—that keeps it in the first stage of a dream or wish. We transition into believing it will become part of our life when we attach our WHY to it.

For example, if your spiritual vision was to practice yoga 3 days a week, journal, meditate, and go for a walk in the woods—why do you want that? Maybe it’s because work is hectic and you want to relieve stress or maybe you need it to connect to your essential self. Your why is whatever you say it is.

We need the WHY. Why makes things sticky. Our why is what allows us to preserve when things get tough, any time you set a goal or create a vision, always attach your why to making it happen.

Next up—it’s time to move our feet on making our 2020 vision of empowerment a reality, we’ll show you exactly how to step into developing a game plan to take action (rather than waiting for some day).
