The Ellen Stripe is named after my mom, Ellen. She is an exceptional woman who has taught me some of my greatest lessons and I'm truly grateful for all the love and support she shares with me. I've watched my mom through triumphs and struggle; her struggle with Rheumatoid Arthritis early on was an extremely challenging time and there was very little I could do to help make that pain go away. Luckily, she has since been undergoing aggressive treatment but her immune system is at a higher risk due to the medications. There is no cure and there is no way to reverse the damage done.
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system – which normally protects its health by attacking foreign substances like bacteria and viruses – mistakenly attacks the joints. This creates inflammation that result in swelling and pain in and around the joints, making everyday activities we take for granted, extremely painful.
About 1.5 million people in the United States have rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Nearly three times as many women have the disease as men. In women, RA most commonly begins between ages 30 and 60. My cousin Morgan was diagnosed in her 20's with severe RA. The Ellen Stripe is dedicated to bring awareness to the challenging disease that many people don't talk about but struggle greatly with. Proceeds from the sale of this stripe will be donated to the Arthritis Foundation, www.arthritis.org.
The Arthritis Foundation is leading the fight for the arthritis community, helping conquer everyday battles through life-changing information and resources, access to optimal care, advancements in science and community connections.
